The Word Birds are authored and designed by Lorri and Allie Van Leuven, and
these uniquely crafted books are an attractive and innovative way of sharing God's truths. Titles in the series are Truth, Salvation, Fearfully and Wonderfully Made, Once For Us a Child Was Born, Flower Garden, Shoes of Peace, and Resurrection.
Hi Allie, tell us a little about your books and what triggered your joint venture with the Word Birds.
It all started with Lorri. Two things she has always loved are birds and the word of God. While shopping for books for the grandchildren, she realized that few Christian-based books were available. She desired books with cute characters, bright colors, and a simple yet profound message. Lorri knew she needed to create something that would fit what she sought. The idea for this series started when she began sewing these adorable little birds with a pocket beneath their wings, which held a handwritten scripture.
Each time her grandchildren would visit, they would pick up these birds and play with them. The idea then transformed into the Word Birds storybook for children. The Word Birds are God’s messengers flying worldwide to deliver God’s truth to children written on feathers. Lorri still can’t walk past a feather without picking it up and being in awe of God’s majesty. “Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.” Psalm 25: She asked me for help in making this dream come true, and we created The Word Birds together.
What ages are your books targeted for?
The books are great for children aged 3-7 but also adored by adults!
Do you have a favorite?
That is such a tricky question! Each book is special in its own way.
What are some of your plans for Word Birds?
We are finished with the initial Word Bird series, which has seven books. We are in the process of creating one book with all seven included and a few discussion/Bible study questions after each book. We are also currently creating a spin-off book called Hope. This book is about having Hope in Him and is about a little boy who is sick and has lost his hope and needs someone to help him find it! We are waiting for the Lord to tell us what’s next after that!
